Okay, 2020 is here, my wonderful peeps. And I have had time over the holiday break to think – in between crucial cookie based fattening to, of course. And as I reflected on my personal and professional goals, I also came to think of fashion (as I tend to easily do).
And I realised I have never given myself resolutions for my own personal style, or just fashion in general. As it’s something I spend so much time on, I am honestly surprised I haven’t done this sooner. But this time around, I want to set goals that I can spend the entire year working on and hopefully end up a better person, with a better wardrobe and better style. Win!
NUMBER 1 – “Wear everything in my wardrobe once, or say goodbye to it forever”
We’re diving in with the first, and it’s exactly what the quote says. I have to find a way to wear everything I own once this year, in order to justify keeping it. While I normally think these types of challenges can be a bit blind in realising that you can keep items you only wear for special occasions, a whole year really should be enough for me to pull out everything I own. It’s not like I own any red carpet designer gowns or a wedding dress. I wish, but alas, I “only” have the type of dressy items any normal mortal has.
Anything I don’t find a need for, I will donate/sell/give to friends.
All the fabulous pieces I had to have? They better make me everyday, work day, hanging out day, kind of fabulous. Some creativity will be employed to work them into my wardrobe better.
THE GOAL: To have a more functional-to-me wardrobe. Find out why I don’t wear some of the items I was so sure I needed (to the point of considering duplicates), and get better at picking only items I will truly wear the heck out of.
NUMBER 2 – Try more sustainable fashion brands
I have often felt the eco-fashion world a difficult one to navigate and have therefore a bit inexcusably avoided the topic, discarded it as “too difficult, too expensive, too frumpy”. Yes, that last one there as well.
So this year, I am dedicating time and energy (and money), to finding some good, reliable, actually green (and not just green washing) fashion brands.
THE GOAL: Approach fashion and shopping in a more conscious and thoughful way. Hopefully finding a new fave brand. Fingers crossed.
NUMBER 3 – Invest more in “forever pieces”
Apart from handbags, which I already may find it a little too easy to justify adding to my wardrobe. So I want to “invest” in more of my actual wardrobe – not just for the accessories, and find some super high quality every day items. This is something I find really scary, for some reason. Bags I feel safe buying, I feel comfortable knowing they last forever, the wear is minimal, I don’t abuse them and know how to take care of them.
But clothing? No way. In my mind, wearing anything designer clothing makes me feel like I’ll be placed blind in a glass ware shop. I don’t know exactly what’s going to happen, but I know it will end badly. Yet, I want to try. What if I find items which will last me years and years and washes upon washes? It would greatly reduce my waste, and would definitely make me happy to get to keep such nice items around for so long.
THE GOAL: Reduce waste. Look A+. Live more by quality > quantity.
NUMBER 4 – Try on 1 extra piece of clothing when I go shopping
I want to see if I can broaden my style horizon, or so to speak. To see if I can find new items I will love, I will decide to try on one piece of clothing I wouldn’t have thought to try. Things I don’t normally gravitate towards may be undesirable for a reason, but I won’t know unless I try. So as a way to get out of a style rut of sorts, I will try on clothing I don’t necessarily will be a fit. Just one item, when I am headed to the fitting room anyways. This does not mean I will buy them (see all previous points!), but just try on new styles, in an environmentally friendly way.
THE GOAL: Find new items I love, and plainly have more fun with fashion.
So, what do you think of my style resolutions? Do you agree or disagree with any of them? Do you have style resolutions for yourself?
