I have 7 easy tips to tackle the changing of seasons in style, without falling victim to the temperamental weather! We are in that slightly awkward period where the weather is very inconsistent, at least if you live in northern Europe, and dressing appropriately can be a bit tricky. But with a few tips and pieces, it’s actually not too difficult to tweak the summer outfits to suit the autumnal weather we are entering into.

Colour

I definitely feel a bit robbed of summer this year, so I would like to continue to wear my summer pieces for as long as I can. And I find that when I add another piece that is in a darker colour, that is a lot more doable! So I  wear a lot of the same pieces and cuts and silhouettes for those in-between and warmer days, but just in more autumnal colors and the outfit feels very season appropriate. And of course, adding more seasonal prints can do so much, without changing the weight of the fabric. I love a hounds tooth print and I love starting to put it back into my wardrobe for this time of year!

Layers

Take advantage of the autumn temperatures as you can easily play around with different layering pieces without wearing them primarily for warmth. But – remember that layers don’t automatically say autumn, make sure they are appropriate, not more summer textures.

Switch out the shoe!

Switching out your shoes will go a long way in making your outfit appropriate for the transitional weather. I am not quite at boots yet (we’ve been having some late summer days here!), but I have gotten a lot of use of my loafers and sneakers. For warmer days, I go with  loafers that are open in the back. And I have certainly taken my boots out, ready to wear as soon as the weather allows.

Accessories

Accessories are fantastic for making the outfit seem more autumnal, especially if you still find it too warm to add a lot of layers. Switching out both shoes and handbags to darker colours, as well as more autumnal textures, can do so much for your outfit!

Reintroduce your knitwear

Nothing says fall like knits! And it can be a little too warm for it still some days, but I love to start wearing them for my transitional outfits. I start with light knitwear for the transitional season and cotton is fantastic for this in-between weather. I love a cardigan because it is so easy to take on/off depending on how the day turns out and lighter knit jumpers are great for layering over the shoulders, as an added texture, without being too warm!

Switch your short sleeve to a long sleeve

It sounds mind-numbingly simple, but it’s incredible how easy it is to keep wearing almost the same outfit, with just changing the top and the accessories. It’s a great way to keep wearing a lot of your summer items and outfits, but help them be a little bit more appropriate for the season. I have started doing this recently and I love how easy it is, it requires so little brain power in the morning, and I can ease into wearing more autumnal outfits.

Add leather

I had to include leather! It is such a staple in my fall wardrobe and I love to start wearing it again once the weather allows. So if this is you as well, be sure to take it out as soon as possible. You can do coloured leather as well, if you feel like keeping some of the lighter or more summery tones in your wardrobe (or go colourful!).

For earlier in the season, I love to add my leather mini skirt, as it is really not too warm and then I rather add in my leather trousers once it gets a little bit cooler. But I find my leather jacket fairly easy to wear as I keep it open and take it off if needed. It’s such an easy way to take the outfits I have kept in rotation recently and make them instantly transitional weather appropriate.

If you still find it too warm, I would still encourage you to add back in your leather accessories, handbags, leather belts and shoes, as they still do so much!
