Hello friends!
Today I wanted to do a comparison video of the still oh-so-hot Gucci Marmont belt and the classic Gucci interlocking Gs belt. I have owned both for well over 6 months now – the Marmont a bit longer – so I figured it should be a good time to get a fair comparison. I am going to take a pretty in depth look at them, going over the measurements, the various leather properties and the price. I filmed a review as well, if you would like to see how they compare on a person!
Now, let’s get the measurements out of the way. Both of these are in a size 80, and have been modified with a few extra holes punched in them, to fit my waist as well as my hips. I was a bit braver than I thought and actually just punched them myself, being a former stable rat (where modifying leather straps was second nature, surprisingly). The widths are a bit different, however. The Marmont belt is actually a men’s one, and is 3 cm in width (the womens’ are 2 cm and 4 cm, if I am not mistaken), whereas the interlocking Gs belt is 3.8 cm (this also comes in a 2 cm version, I believe).
So if we move on and look at the leather of the various belts, there are more variation. The Marmont is all black, and has the same leather on both sides, and appears much thinner and flexible. The leather is more of a textured leather, which will hide scratches easier. The interlocking Gs belt has a smoother texture to the touch, but it is matte and looks somewhat textured so I have never experienced it as being very fragile leather or as scratching easily, although I haven’t been particularly rough on it. The interlocking Gs belt also is much thicker and less flexible. This results in it being a lot more sturdy, and it doesn’t “warp” as easily as the Marmont belt, which can tend to get a bend at the back and also where the buckle sits. This is practically impossible to see when wearing though, and due to being thinner, the Marmont is also more comfortable to wear. The inside is lined with what seems to be suede fabric, but could very well be microfiber as well. It is a light beige, so both of those two factors combine to make it a bit more prone to marks and signs of wear.
The logo is obviously the main difference between these belts, if you are trying to decide between the two. We all know the Marmont logo has been wildly popular, your grandma and her dog may not have it, but they know of it. I still really love it, and – contrary to what many will tell you – this is not a new trend. This belt dates back 10, if not 20 years at least, so I personally believe it has a much greater staying power than the “it will be dead next month” message certain fashion high brows keep saying. I am absolutely in love with the hardware of this buckle, and feel that it makes this logo much more tolerable, despite being gold and large. The matted, rustic, worn, “I don’t take myself too seriously” vibe is what makes it so excellent for dressing up your outfits.
That is not to say that I don’t like the interlocking Gs logo, I do. It gives off a different look, and I still love it. It has a more polished look, being so shiny and angular, and is somehow dressy without being as in your face, which is why I love having that one as well. The hardware is also unique in that it somehow manages to be both silver and light gold at the same time. From my understanding, this is what Gucci calls their “Gucci gold”. The effect is that I can easily pair this belt with both gold and silver hardware bags and accessories, for the days where I care about that. It is also a bit lighter than the Marmont buckle, allowing the belt to sit a bit closer to the body, whereas the Marmont can sometimes create a slight “bend” where the buckle is, due to the weight, even if it is faint. My drawback with this belt, is that it is much more prone to scratching. I am not very hard on my things, but I am not about to be the kind of person who has to constantly worry about how I treat my things. They are here to serve me, not the other way around. So this belt has a fair bit scratching from the 6 months I have owned it. It is fortunately only really noticeable from quite close up, and certainly doesn’t ruin the look when I wear it.
As far as price goes, I paid € 295 for the Marmont and € 270 for the interlocking G belt, so not only are they fairly similarly priced, as far as high end designer belts go, they are absolutely on the more reasonable side. I also feel the quality on both of these belts is absolutely excellent and well worth the price.
So, which one would I choose? I find it difficult to answer, because I really love them both. I find both belts quite versatile, and easy to style. They both go with a wide array of different outfits, although the Marmont is leaning a bit more casual, while also being able to dress up outfits for a night out or anything that isn’t too formal. I wear them with jeans, dresses, over coats and blazers, high waisted trousers and skirts, so almost anything really. The Marmont is softer and more comfortable to wear, while the interlocking G belt holds its shape slightly better. So if you are quite sensitive to anything tight, and prefer loose clothing, I would probably go with the Marmont. If this is not that important to you, I would decide based on the logo hardware, and whether you prefer the brass or light gold. If you wear very casual clothing, I tend to think the Marmont does a better job of dressing up your outfit, whereas I prefer the interlocking G belt for outfits that are a little more dressy or based around structured pieces. Jeans and T-shirt? Marmont. Tailored trousers and a wrap top? Interlocking G. If it is your first designer belt, I am inclined to think the Marmont is going to wow you the most by how amazing it is at making you feel like you’re always looking a little extra dressed up, and I doubt it would let you down. I got the Interlocking G belt second, because I was so happy with the Marmont and wanted more variety and I was not disappointed. But honestly, I feel like you can’t go wrong with either.
